Social Network Fragments emerged from a collaboration between danah boyd and Jeff Potter.

As a researcher in the Sociable Media Group, danah was exploring ways to provide self-awareness to users concerning their social behaviors online. She was interested in social networks as indicative of the social construction of self that emerges from people's natural habits. In particular, she felt that these networks would reveal the ways in which individuals facet their interactions and thus their identity.

As danah and Jeff were classmates at Brown University, she was well aware of Jeff's work on visualizing such networks and suggested that they collaborate to integrate his BuddyGraph work and her notions of identity management. Working together, they constructed Social Network Fragments in order to empower users to be aware of their own digital behaviors.
