MAS 963 Conversation project
assignment (4 parts):
- Go to 4 restaurants. For each, describe their atmosphere:
First, describe your initial impression - is it formal? informal?
for children? business people? Is it serene? Frantic? Then look at the details of
how this atmosphere is achieved - sound, lighting, colors,
seating, etc. Try to be as clear and vivid in your
description as possible.
- Look at 3 different magazines. Describe their overall tone:
who is the audience? what type of material is in them? Then
examine how the layout of the magazine contributes (or if it
doesn't, explain that, too) to its atmosphere. For each, scan a page
and annotate it.
- Read 5 newsgroups. Without worrying about the details of how
you would automatically generate this image, sketch what an overview of each
newsgroup would look like. Your design vocabulary
includes color, form, text, density, contrast, motion, etc.
Think about what impression each
newsgroup gives you -- how can you translate this to a visual
(or if you are so inclined, an auditory) rendering? Your
impression may be based on # of participants, topic, tone of
discussion, style of interaction, etc.
Your 5 designs should reveal the
similarities as well as the differences between these groups.
- For one of these groups, design a group level visualization, i.e. how would you show threads, postings, and/or individuals. Your solution here can be a continuation of one of the projects done for last week's assignment. In addition to the issues we raised in class, think about the relationship of this level of viewing to the overview level (above). How would this visualization be different for a different group?
This assignment is due Tuesday Sept 29 by 5:00 p.m. Please submit
the URL of your designs online.
