Read the papers. And, spend some
time looking at online newsgroups. You can use a newsreader, or look
at them via Google groups.
Write and essay about these groups,
addressing the following questions:
- From your observations, and referring to the studies you have read,
what are some of the things that motivate people to participate in
these discussions? Does this vary by topic? If so, why do you think
it does?
- What are some of the ways people acknowledge specific other
participants? Do certain people stand out in your impression of the
groups you read - if so, why?
- How are group's boundaries and integrety maintained? What makes
newsgroups vulnerable to free-loaders and destructive behaviors? What
solutions seem promising?
- What is reputation in a newsgroup? What social functions does
it serve? How can the groups be redefined to enhance this value?
